ONE hundred children from four of the county's primary schools joined voices for a second performance of Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo recently - the first having been performed by four other school groups earlier in the year.
In a new venture which sees the musical facilities of the Cathedral schools being shared among state schools, a series of workshops have taken place in Holmer, Broadlands, Lugward-ine and St Francis Xavier schools over recent weeks, led by co-ordinator Martyn Lane.
The day's activities centred around preparing the singers for the afternoon performance in Hereford Cathedral of Captain Noah, a 30-minute piece which is always a hit with youngsters.
"It's quite a big occasion for the children to come into College Hall for the first time," said Geraint Bowen, director of music at the Cathedral.
"It's the first time that they will have heard that many voices at any one time."
Solo parts were taken by cathedral lay-clerk Duncan Wilkins and professional soprano Lucy Bowen, with instrumental accompaniment by John Williams (piano).
Cathedral organist Geraint Bowen treated the gathered pupils to a demonstration of the famous Father Willis organ, the last time such an arrangement will be possible before the organ's major overhaul, due to begin in January.
Mr Lane runs a Saturday morning singing group in central Hereford for children aged between 7 and 11. Interested parents should contact him on 01432 269403. The group will perform lunchtime carols in All Saints Church on December 13 from noon.
