A CRADLEY man whose daughter died in the Lockerbie bombing is to build an orphanage in South India using the compensation the family received.
Rev John Mosey's 19-year-old daughter Helga was one of 270 people killed when Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Scotland in December 1988, due to a bomb planted by Libyan agents.
Rev Mosey, of Tanhouse Lane, decided to set up the orphanage in Lootacomund, Tamil Nadu, after being awarded compensation by the Libyan government.
Thirty orphaned girls were living in rented accommodation in the village, when the landlord decided he wanted the property back. The village church had managed to acquire some land and the Rev Mosey offered to build a permanent orphanage on it.
He said: "I visited the place, saw the site and the girls there and came to the knowledge that I wanted to do something.
"There's a passage in the Bible, which has become our family motto. It is that you might be overcome by evil, but overcome evil by doing good. Out of this awful tragedy, we can bring good that will benefit these disadvantaged people."
Rev Mosey, who has also set up a home for abused children in the Phillipines, will travel to India on Thursday (January 15) to oversee the £40,000 project. He expects the orphanage to be completed by August.
