Chance to find a different way
THE REFUSAL of the Government to support this proposed road gives us an opportunity to think of other solutions.
Rotherwas is a comparatively small site and there is not a lot of room for expansion. If it is felt to be essential to provide better access, alternative routes should be investigated.
A more economic solution would be to develop the site at Moreton-on-Lugg, where there is plenty of space, easy access from the A49, and a railway line where it is even possible that a siding might be placed, enabling easy transport of goods. Perhaps a rail halt for workers on the site?
The Green Party, together with other groups, has been pressing for this development for at least a decade. Could money from another budget be obtained for this?
The industrial site at Leominster, the second biggest town in the county, is being greatly enlarged. Surely, some businesses could move there?
A new access road from the A49 is being constructed, and it is close to the railway station. It seems odd that everything must be focused on Rotherwas, especially as the proposed road would destroy a very attractive area at the base of Dinedor Hill.
