A CONTROVERSIAL proposal to build more than 60 homes on the outskirts of Ross-on-Wye has been put on hold by Herefordshire Council planners.
Cardiff-based developer Lovell Partnerships' proposal for 66 houses - of which 24 would be affordable - near to Walford Road opposite the Vine Tree Inn went before the council yesterday (Wednesday).
Councillors deferred the application, which has attracted opposition from nearby Tudorville, and asked for more information on traffic calming measures.
A report before the council included details of a survey which demonstrated the need for 190 affordable homes in Ross over the next five years.
Existing farm buildings would be demolished and a new road access built with traffic calming measures along Walford Road. The developer has offered £20,000 for the latter.
A children's play area would be included in the estate and the developer says it will provide £25,000 for improving an open area at The Purlands.
The 66 new homes planned range from two-bedroom to five-bedroom properties and a barn conversion, which includes 12 different house types.
But members of Ross Town Council are against the proposal, believing it to be an 'over-development.'
Walford Parish Council has also expressed concern, saying the suggested 'gateway' posts would look like guard posts. Parish council members also believe the road system in the town needs to be scrutinised because traffic congestion would be caused by another 100-odd cars, which the development would generate.
Artefacts found
The Tudorville Residents Association is also opposed to the development and has submitted a 214-strong petition.
The petition points out that residents are against development until traffic-calming measures have been introduced along the whole length of Walford Road.
An archaeological study of the site may be necessary because pottery and flint artefacts have been found near to the site.
There is also evidence of bats and nesting birds using the existing farm building.
