COMMUNITY CENTRE - The next NRG Nite at Knighton Community Centre will be on Friday, December 19, from 9.30pm to 1 am. This event is for adults and anyone who appears to be under 18 and who has no proof of age will be refused admission. Doors will close at 11.30pm.
WI MARKET UPDATE - The Christmas WI Market will be on Saturday December 20, at Knighton Farm Supplies, and the WI Market will also be at the Farmers' Market at Knighton Community Centre from 10am to 1pm. The market will close after the Christmas Market until Saturday, January 31, 2004, when it will re-open at Knighton Farm Supplies. However Knighton WI Market will be at the Farmers' Market on Saturday, January 24, at the Community Centre.
EXTRAVAGANZA - Tonight (Thursday) Knighton's streets will be closed to vehicular traffic at 5 pm, the start of Knighton's 2003 Christmas Extravaganza. Star artists booked for the evening are Contraband (who will play rock and soul live), Knighton Town Silver Band, The Clun Cowboy, George's barrel organ and fortune teller Septic Peg. And Radio Maldwyn's gardening expert Arthur Powers (gardener of mystery) has promised to make a personal appearance at Bradford's garden yard during the course of the evening. From 6 pm there will be stalls, crafts and collectibles, and a barrel organ at the Knighton Hotel. There will be market stalls in Station Road and stalls for good causes on Peace Square. There will also be a keyless organ at the top of High Street. At the Offa's Dyke Antiques Centre there will be a sale of turned items in wood by the late John Weale in support of Knighton Museum and Gallery Trust. From 6.30pm entrants in the grand Victorian fancy dress competition should assemble for judging at the Knighton Hotel. There are three classes: 1. best young person under 14 years of age; 2. best adult; 3. best couple or group. Then at 7pm that seasonal celebrity Father Christmas will arrive, and together with Knighton's Mayor and Town Crier, Councillor Derek Price, will lead the procession down High Street and Broad Street to Peace Square where Father Christmas will enter his grotto, from where he will distribute small gifts to the children. Other attractions include a merry go round for young children, hot food from local restaurants and takeaways joined by stalls selling bakes potatoes, hot chestnuts, candy floss and toffee apples. Most shops will offer cash sale discounts, special offers and Christmas cheer. The street celebrations will wind down at about 9pm, but the festivities will continue late into the night in the town's clubs and pubs.
DOLAU ACTION GROUP - A sales table in Llandrindod Wells raised £126 for Dolau Station Action Group. Winners in the raffle were Mrs Heppell, Mr Price, Mrs Rauber, M. Crawley, Mr Shelton, Mr Morgan and Mrs Robinson. Action Group Team Leader George Scarfe thanked Sommerfield for allowing the use of their arcade for the sale and everyone who supported the event so generously. Proceeds will go towards improvements at Dolau Station.
BOWLING CLUB - The ladies of Knighton Bowling Club held their fortnightly whist drive on December 4 at the Club House in Church Road. Winners were: ladies: Mrs O. Myhill, Mrs O. Jones and Mrs D. Bowen: gentlemen: Mr K. Ellis, Mrs S. Moorhouse and Mr T. Pugh: consolation: Mrs M. Bufton and Mr M. Evans: highest score either half: Mr I. Jones. The MC was Mrs S. Moorhouse, and prizes were presented by the captain, Jenny Stothard. Thanks were given by Miss L. Parker MBE. Winners in the draw were Mrs O. Myhill, Mrs C.Price, Mrs D. Bowen, Mrs M. Bufton and Mrs M. Moorhouse. The next whist drive will be at the Club House, Church Road, on Thursday, December 18, at 7.30pm. This will be the Christmas whist drive.
ST EDWARD'S CHURCH - John Clements led Sunday Worship for the Second Sunday in Advent at Saint Edward's Church. Ms Fay Exworth-Dent and Mrs Diana Rudge read the lessons, and the Reverend Donald Green led the intercessions. Cecil Rudge was organist, and Mrs Hilary Howcroft directed the Saint Edward's Choir.
EAST RADNOR PARISH - Services for the coming week in the Parish of East Radnor are as follows: Sunday (Third in Advent): 9.30am Sung Eucharist at Knighton (Father Andrew Pearce); 11am Sung Eucharist at Norton (Father Paul Gerrard); 11am Sung Eucharist at Whitton (Father Andrew Pearce). The Eucharist will be celebrated every day from Monday to Saturday at Norton at 6pm, except for Tuesday when it will be at 11.30am. On Wednesday, December 17, Eucharist will be celebrated at Knighton at 10am.
KNIGHTON BAPTIST - This Sunday worship for the Lord's Day will be at 11 am at Knighton Baptist Church and will be led George Linaker. Carols by Candlelight will be at 6.30pm on Sunday, December 21. This service will be led by the Sisterhood, and will be followed by refreshments in the schoolroom. On Thursday December 25 at 10am there will be a service with Communion led by Rev Michael Humphreys.
METHODIST CHURCH - Morning Worship will be at 11am this Sunday, Advent 2, at Knighton Methodist Church.
CATHOLIC CHURCH - Mass is celebrated at 11 am each Sunday at Knighton Catholic Church.
WEDNESDAY CLUB - Knighton and District Wednesday Club met in the Social Room, Saint Edward's Close. Helpers were Mrs N. Barrett and Mrs E. Conway. Winners in the raffle were Mrs Plant, Mrs Barrett, Miss V. Pugh, Mrs Conway, Mrs Payne, Mrs B. Davies, Mrs Moss, Mrs Parker Smith, Mr D. Lewis, Mrs Parry and Mrs Phil Cadwallader.
POPPY APPEAL - The Royal British Legion Knighton Branch Poppy Appeal raised £2,793.
