NORTH Herefordshire youngsters will get their first swing at golf in an initiative launched by a major bank and the Golf Foundation.
Herefordshire Schools sports partnership has been given three bags of equipment by HSBC to be used initially by the Minster College and its feeder primary schools.
Youngsters will play 'Tri Golf,' a modified version of the game in which they use oversize plastic clubs and balls. Teachers are to attend training workshops to gain key skills.
Said Minster College director of sport Alan Roberts: "This initiative will give more young people in our junior schools an opportunity to experience golf, particularly girls.
"It will also generate awareness of golfing opportunities."
Local golf professionals - Phillip Brookes of the Grove and Andy Ferriday of Leominster- are backing the scheme.
Leominster club member and businessman Roger Barrington has presented the Minster College with a shield to be awarded annually at the college's golf championships.
