I WAS pleased to read the Hereford Times highlighting the new law concerning the ban on hand-held mobile phones while driving, and quoting the advice from West Mercia Police.
However, some drivers still ignore this law, and, indeed, other sensible aspects of motoring law, as I observed this week while working next to the busy A465 near Allensmore.
One female driver was using a mobile while driving along at about 50-plus mph, not wearing a seatbelt and allowing her toddler to jump up and down in the rear seat unrestrained. Within an hour I had seen a lorry driver overtake a tractor and trailer while he was shaving with a hand held battery operated shaver, a van driver eating a pie, and two car drivers drinking from cans or bottles (hopefully soft drinks).
Not only were these drivers breaking the law, but also they were endangering their own lives and those of other road users who were obeying the laws and driving sensibly. So perhaps it is time to police greater powers to remove such irresponsible drivers from driving for a considerable length of time?
