A MASKED raider burst into Wellington Post Office, demanded money from the safe and then stole a car from the premises last Friday afternoon.
A man wearing a black padded jacket threatened a woman employee, who was forced to hand over a quantity of cash from the safe.
The raider, who was about 5ft 5ins, then stole her vehicle from the shop's parking bay to make his getaway shortly before 2pm.
Police cordoned off the building and carried out door-to-door inquiries within an hour of the raid.
The woman suffered minor injuries, including shock, but she did not see a weapon.
Her white Ford Escort car, registration J68 VKG, was later discovered dumped at the Lads Club in Widemarsh Common, Hereford.
The robbery has stunned the local community and neighbouring villages, according to chief co-ordinator of Wellington's Neighbourhood Watch scheme, Jack Cresswell.
"We would never have dreamed it would happen around here. We have been living in the village for many years and we have never known anything like this happen before," said Mr Cresswell.
Wellington resident Kim Musson said: "Wellington is a nice and quiet area where you believe it is safe to bring up your children. People are horrified something like this could happen."
Mr Cresswell has since spoken to Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators in neighbouring villages, who are on their guard against similar attacks.
"A lot of people I have spoken to are worried because they simply don't know where something like this could happen next," he said.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the robbery and want to speak to anyone who saw the white Ford Escort travelling between Wellington and Widemarsh Common after 1.55pm last Friday. Anyone with information, should contact Hereford Police Station on 08457 444888.
