A SERVICE first celebrated in the 13th century will be taking place again next Sunday, when 15-year-old Liam Dunachie is installed as Hereford's latest Boy Bishop.
Former head chorister Liam retired from Hereford Cathedral Choir last August after the Three Choirs Festival.
Liam's term of office lasts until the Cathedral's carol service on December 23. His principal duty is to write and deliver a sermon.
"Liam was the obvious candidate for election," said Canon Andrew Piper, Precentor of Hereford Cathedral, "because he has exercised leadership and authority with gentleness and humility."
Though the tradition of the Boy Bishop ceremony was banned by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, it has been revived in recent years by several cathedrals including Salisbury, Wymondham Abbey and some churches dedicated to St Nicholas, on whose feast day the ceremony was traditionally held.
