Surveyors are to carry out an examination of the Victorian Chapel and Mortuary off Watery Lane, Newent, and draw up an action plan by Christmas.

The work will be carried by the Cheltenham-based business Stokes and Bartosch, which has carried out structural surveys at St Mary's Church in Newent.

Newent's deputy mayor Bill Offord said of the chapel: "The roof and some stone work has deteriorated."

Town clerk Deirdre Rosser said the surveyors would recommend urgent repairs to be carried out in the next year, plus another wave of repairs to be completed in the next five years and more long-term repairs, if necessary, after that.

Coun Offord said the question was what to do with the listed building after repairs had been carried out.

The chapel is no longer in use and the mortuary area has been used by the council as a workshop.
