CAMPAIGNERS for a new swimming pool in Bromyard say the project is still alive, despite discouraging statements by Herefordshire Council.

The council's ruling cabinet was yesterday (Thursday) being asked to vote through a timetable for the building of a new pool at Leominster. The pool was described as serving the whole of North Herefordshire and councillors were specifically asked to discount support for any other developments, such as that at Bromyard.

But Francis Jarman, chairman of the Bromyard and District Community Swimming Pool Working Party, said this did not matter, as his group is private, entirely separate from both Herefordshire Council and Bromyard Town Council.

The working party has found land near Hardwicke Close, which the owner has promised to give up for a swimming pool, if Herefordshire Council grants planning permission for 36 homes nearby.

Around £45,000 of private money, some of it raised in the early seventies, is available to fund the pool.

"All we need from the council is planning permission for the site," said Mr Jarman.

Permission for the homes and the pool has been applied for but a decision is not due until early summer.
