Stapenhill 1 Wellington 2
WELLINGTON produced a fine all-round performance to win a thoroughly entertaining, end-to-end cup-tie and reach the last 64 in the FA Vase.
After a goal-less first period the home team took the lead but Wellington showed great character to force a win in extra-time.
The first half was a great spectacle with both keepers, Andy Beeston and Marcus Priday, producing a string of fine saves as both sides threw caution to the wind. The second half started in the same fashion and the home team went in front just before the hour mark when Paul Allen stabbed home from a teasing free-kick in a crowded goal-mouth.
Stapenhill pushed forward in search of a second, but were rocked back in the 72nd minute when Wellington equalised. Keith Jones met a deep cross from Kenny Styles and looped his header back over Beeston.
The tie went into extra-time and it was the visitors who grabbed the lead midway through the first period. Once again it was Jones who showed good control to take a probing ball from Mark Fish and slip it sweetly past Beeston.
The home team responded well but a mixture of fitness and determination from the whole squad left Wellington to celebrate at the final whistle.
Wellington have been drawn at home to Northern League Division 1 side Billingham Synthonia in the third round of the FA Vase. The long established North-east side, who have reached the first round of the FA Cup on a number of occasions, beat home team Liversedge 2-1 in the second round.
Wellington manager Wyn Owen said the draw was the continuation of an adventure for his club, and these exciting times were a just reward for the whole club, not only those representing it on the field but also the unsung heroes who formed the backroom back-up.
The tie will take place on Saturday, December 13 with a 3pm kick-off.
