BOWLS CLUB - A grand start to the new season has seen the St Weonards based Sellack Wanderers, short mat bowls club, experience a very busy time with a trip to Essex in which under-18 youngsters Martin Barnfield and Nigel Skyrme, played for the England Select team at the Shell Club. The Essex County Senior Team proved to be stiff opposition for the visitors. Essex won the match 20-12, which became the first match that the England under-18 select team had lost in their first 12 months of being formed. Back home at St Weonards, The Wanderers Club joined forces with the newly-formed Golden Valley League of Friends to organise a short mat bowls, triples teams tournament. As well as raising cash for the final four winning teams prizes, The event, once again made the Air Ambulance, the chosen good cause to raise cash for. A sum of £115, bettered last seasons event and this popular event originally started five years ago as the Sellack Triples, attracted 22 teams. Teams from clubs in Herefordshire and some from Gloucestershire, helped make the event an enjoyable and jovial event, which saw the Sellack club's A Team, consisting of Nigel Skyrme with his cousins Martin's Gareth Barnfield, win the first prize. Runners-up were Wooton Hall and in third place was Corse and Staunton, closely followed by another Wooton Hall Team. The club players at Sellack Wanderers are this season playing in two leagues, and the three playing surfaces are very often in use. The James Campbell Memorial Shield, this season, has attracted eight pair teams and heading that league at present is Gareth Barnfield and his grandmother, Gladys Skyrme. The club is running a singles league through the winter season. Ivor Skyrme heads that table with 11 points. Bulmers Short Mat Bowls Club were entertained at St Weonards in a friendly match, won by Bulmers.
