ANNUAL MEETING - The Ladies' Section of Knighton Bowling Club held its annual meeting the Club House on November 14. The meeting was presided over by Miss L. Parker MBE. After reports from the secretary, treasurer and captain had been accepted the following offers were elected: President, Miss L. Parker MBE; captain Mrs J. Stothard; vice captain Mrs D. Philips; secretary, Mrs J. Davies; assistant secretary Mrs S. Hamar; treasurer Mrs P. Parker; ladies fixtures secretaries Mrs J. Davies and Mrs J. Hamar; press officer Miss M. Roberts.
WHIST DRIVE - The ladies of Knighton Bowling Club held their fortnightly whist drive on Thursday, November 20, at the Club House, Church Road. Winners were: ladies: Mrs I. Benson, Mrs H. Morgan and Mrs J. Williams: gentlemen: Mr I. Jones, Mrs D, Edwards and Mrs S. Moorhouse: consolation: Mrs C. Price and Mr K. Ellis:highest either half Mrs J. Vale. Prizes were presented by Mrs L. Bennett. Winners in the draw were Mr R. Jones, Mrs R. farmer, Mrs J. Williams, Mr R. Jones, Mrs R. Farmer and Mrs R. Farmer. MC was Mrs S. Moorhouse. The next whist drive will be in the Club House, Church Road, on Thursday, December 4, at 7.30pm.
OXFAM KNITTERS - Knighton Oxfam Knitters conclude their year on Thursday, December 4, with a little Christmas celebration and no work. The current members hope that some of the former members will be able to join them at the Social Room, Saint Edward's Close. The 2004 working parties will be begin on Thursday, January 8, 2004.
WEDNESDAY CLUB - Knighton and District Wednesday Club met recently at the Social Room, Saint Edward's Close. Raffle winners were Mrs Moss, Mrs Plant, Miss Pugh, Mrs Barrett, Mrs Davies, Mrs Payne, Mrs Conway, Mr Lewis, Mrs Parry and Mrs Cadwallader. Helpers were Mrs N. Barrett and Mrs E. Conway, and Mrs Conway was caller for Bingo.
BAND CONCERT - Knighton Town Silver Band will be in concert with Llandovery Male Voice Choir this Saturday at 7.30pm in Knighton Community Centre.
EAST RADNOR PARISH - Services for the week coming in the Parish of East Radnor are Sunday (1st Sunday of Advent): 10am Group Eucharist at Knighton (Father Andrew Pearce); 6pm Churches Together in Knighton and District United Service at Norton. There will be a celebration of Eucharist at Norton from Monday to Saturday at 6 pm, except for Tuesday when it will be at 11.30am. On Wednesday, December 3, there will be a celebration of Eucharist at Knighton at 11 am.
METHODIST CHURCH - Morning Worship this Sunday (Advent Sunday) at Knighton Methodist Church will be at 11 am and will be a Communion service led by the Reverend Michael Langstaff. At 6pm members of the Methodist Church will join their fellow members of Churches Together in Knighton and District for a United Service in St Andrew's Church, Norton.
BAPTIST CHURCH - The Reverend Michael Humphreys will lead Worship for the Lord's Day at Knighton Baptist Church at 11am. Members of Knighton Baptist Church will take part in the United Songs of Praise at Norton Church at 6pm organised by Churches Together in Knighton and District. Because of this there will be no evening service at Knighton's sister church at Knucklas.
CATHOLIC CHURCH - Mass is celebrated at 11am every Sunday at Knighton Catholic Church in Market Street.
Christmas Bazaar - St Edward's Christmas Bazaar will be on Saturday at 3pm. Father Christmas will visit during the afternoon.
Display of Cribs - There will be a display of cribs in Saint Edwards tomorrow (Friday) until Sunday. The church will be open from 10am to 5pm on each of the three days except during services.
RBL WOMEN'S SECTION - Knighton branch of the Royal British legion, Women's Section raised £120 for the Poppy Appeal at a coffee morning. Mrs June Ruff, Mrs Nora Barrett and Mr Michael Conway each gave donations. Winners in the raffle were Mrs Carole Oliver, Mrs Marjorie Wanklin, Mr John Brooke, Mrs Mona Cadwallader, Miss Mrs Mary Morgan, Mrs Biddy Roberts and Mrs Betty Morris.
PRIZE BINGO - Knighton Town Football Club is holding its annual Christmas prize bingo at the Clubhouse on Monday. The doors will open at 7pm with eyes down at 8pm
COMMUNITY CENTRE - On Friday, December 5, there will be a special NRG for 12-to-17 year olds, with soft drinks and refreshments, at Knighton Community Centre from 9.30pm to 1am. The next NRG for adults will be on Friday, December 19, from 9.30pm to 1am. Admission to this event will be for those aged 18 years and over. Proof of age may be required.
Training Room - The two changing rooms behind the stage at Knighton Community Centre have now been made into the Training Room, though a folding partition enables the one room to become two once more if desired. This facility has been provided with full disabled access by means of a ramp constructed at the rear of the Centre and provides a suitable venue for smaller meetings, seminars and training sessions. Anyone interested in booking the Training Room, or any facility at the Community Centre, should contact the Bookings Secretary, Mrs Gina Lynch, at Little Lurkenhope Cottage, Knighton, LD7 1NE or by telephoning 01547 520164.
COFFEE MORNING - Knighton Catholic Church raised £248 at a recent coffee morning in Saint Edward's Church Hall. The organisers thank church members and members of other churches in the town who helped to run this event and make it an enjoyable occasion as well as a profitable one.
SONGS OF PRAISE - Churches Together in Knighton and District will hold its annual songs of praise service at Saint Andrew's Church, Norton, on Sunday at 6pm.
COMMUNITY CAROLS - Community Carols, organised by Churches Together in Knighton and District, will be at Knighton Community Centre on Tuesday, December 9, at 7.30pm. The concert will feature Knighton Town Silver Band, Knighton Primary School Choir, the Handbell Ringers and Teme Spirits. The collection this year will go to the Air Ambulance.
RECYCLING FUNDS - Knighton Town Council has allocated the following sums to local organisations in the town. The recycling committee met on November 12 and the following have now been approved by the full council: Knighton First Team, appeal for vehicle £500; Knighton Primary School, library books, £100; Teme Valley Badminton Club, table tennis table £100; Knighton Under 5s Playgroup £100; First Knucklas Scout Group (Scouts, Cubs and Beavers) £250; Knighton Rainbows £100; 2nd Knighton Brownies £100; 1st Knighton Guides £100; Knighton Rangers £100. This gave a total donation of £1,450, which left £1,290 of allocable funds in the Recycling Fund. The committee proposed that a large proportion of the remaining balance be allocated to new play facilities. The cheques will be distributed at 6.45pm on Wednesday, December 10, before the next meeting of the Town Council. The Town Clerk, Mrs Fiona Pearce, reported to the Recycling Committee that the recycling credits received from Powys County Council in the first three quarters of 2003 were slightly increased, by £196, on those received in the first three quarters on 2002.
CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAU - Members of Knighton Town Council expressed their disappointment that the Citizens Advice Bureau no longer used Knighton Community Centre. In a letter to the town council, the bureau cited lack of confidentiality, security and access for the disabled as its reasons for moving from the centre. Councillor Roger Bright expressed concern that anyone who wished to consult the Citizens' Advice Bureau now had to go to Presteigne. He thought the problem was that CAB felt it was being pushed into the training room behind the stage. Councillor Ken Harris said that the training room had been provided with a disability access ramp at considerable expense. Councillor Rob Reeves thought that CAB should consider moving back to the Library.
FLAGPOLES - Knighton's proposed two flagpoles are in the process of being erected the Mayor of Knighton, Councillor Derek Price, informed fellow town councillors. There will be two flagpoles and they will be put up on land by the Police Station in West Street.
JUNIOR COUNCIL - The council was told that a new Junior Council with a Junior Mayor and Deputy Mayor has been elected. The Junior Mayor's first official function was to switch on the Christmas lights.
MINCE PIES - Knighton Town Council has approved expenditure of £135 on 400 hot mince pies for the switching on of the Christmas lights.
NEW PLAY EQUIPMENT - Councillor Ken Harris, who is Knighton's representative on Powys County Council as well as a member of Knighton Town Council, said that the county council will begin to install new play equipment at the Offa's Dyke Playpark on December 1.
