Proceeds from betting on the length of the captain's and vice-captain's drives went to the captain's charity. The winners were Cynthia Howard and Annette Mansie (captain's drive 167 yards) and Tilly Hare (vice-captain's drive 126 yards).

n Neither mulled wine nor the high jinks of an exploding golf ball could put off Ross-on-Wye Ladies' new captain Jean Ovens as she started her reign with fine 176-yard drive down the first at her drive-in.

Sixty members took part in the 16-hole stableford competition, which was won by Jean Reynolds with 37 points off a seven handicap in a close finish.

A raffle to guess the length of the captain's drive was won by Mary Palmer. It was in aid of the captain's chosen charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind.

A countback was needed to resolve the ladies' Florida Scramble over 16 holes with the team of Jill Oates, Ellie Peake and Mary Davies pipping Dawn Ross, Penny Caves and Val Watts after both teams totalled 48 points.
