THE grand charity auction on Saturday at the Travell-ers Rest, Malswick, raised £3,500 for the Newent Christmas Lights Appeal.
Organisers Newent Cham-ber of Commerce hoped to raise more than £1,000 for new lights, but since it was so much more successful than anticipated, members are considering running a programme of community events in the New Year, as well as providing the lights.
Chamber vice-chairman Craig Walker said: "Over 100 people turned up, and some had to stand in a packed marquee.
"There were 140 quality lots, including stone garden furniture, family days out and restaurant meals.
"The highest bid, £490, was for a signed David Beckham shirt, there was fast and furious bidding."
Newent Chamber of Commerce is saying thank you to all the local people and businesses who supported the event.
