A decision to paint the railings in front of St Katherine's flats grey has left Ledbury town councillors seeing red.
The colour was chosen by the Dean and Chapter of Hereford Cathedral, despite a request by the council for black and gold.
Mayor Keith Francis said: "The gates in the archway are black and gold. This is in keeping with the street furniture, such as litter bins and hanging baskets, which are also black.
"We are trying to get a uniform colour scheme throughout the town."
Speaking at a council meeting last Thursday, Coun Clive Jupp said: "It makes a mockery of consultation. We should continue to protest as long as we can."
However, Coun Jo Cooper called the black and gold paint scheme "tacky" and supported the decision of the Dean and Chapter to opt instead for grey.
