Luctonians 49 pts Old Laurentians 7
LUCTONIANS cruised into the fourth round of the Powergen Intermediate Cup by completing a double over Old Laurentians.
Luctonians, who had beaten the Warwickshire visitors 50-3 in the league in September, made several changes which gave fringe-squad members a chance to show their paces.
Laurentians exerted early pressure without looking likely to score and after 12 minuters it was Luctonians who took the lead from their first serious attack. Hooker Gareth Miles sprinted clear to score under the posts and Will Parry added the conversion.
Within five minutes the visitors were level when Luctonians lost possession in midfield and presented winger Paul Willis with a clear run for a try which was converted by Denzil Evans.
Play became rather scrappy for a while before centre Greg Harwood burst through to score, Parry again converting.
The home side then took control and in the space of 10 minutes number eight Dwaine Cadwall-ader, making his first start of the season, went over for two tries, both of which were converted by Parry.
In a rare Laurentians attack on the stroke of half-time, only a superb double tackle by Harwood prevented a score and Luctonians turned around at the interval with a 28-7 lead.
Within a minute of the restart winger Ryan Henshaw went over after good work by Parry, who again converted.
Luctonians made several changes early in the half but still remained in control and further tries by winger Andy Garrod and a second by Harwood were both converted by Parry.
To their credit, the visitors never gave up and for the last 15 minutes controlled possession within the Luctonians half but lacked the fire-power to score.
The final margin of 42 points reflected Lucton-ians' superiority and provided them with a place in the last eight of the North/Midland division of the competition.
