The Rector of Newent, Rev. Robert Simpson, praised the turnout at the remembrance service on Sunday, after about 350 people stood, heads bowed, for the two minutes' silence.
He said: "That's a good turnout, given the England and Wales World Cup rugby game was on at the same time. It was a very good occasion."
A service was held at St Mary's Church, at 10am, followed by the traditional gathering at the war memorial, in the churchyard.
Mr Simpson said: "A lot of youth organisations were there, including the Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Army Training Corps and Air Cadets."
Members of the Newent branch of the RBL were also out in force.
Mr Simpson read all the names on the war memorial, covering both world wars. Then a bugler played the Last Post, before the two minutes' silence.
