TWO Bromyard women have given a hospital cancer unit a leg up in an unusual fundraising effort.

Olive Allsup and Rose Gater have been collecting money for Cheltenham General Hospital inside a plastic leg designed to model tights and stockings at Olive's wool and clothing shop in Broad Street.

Rose's daughter Elaine Lewis, of the Schallenge, inspired the collection. She is currently being treated for breast cancer at the hospital's oncology centre.

Elaine presented a cheque for £410 to staff at the hospital last Tuesday.

Rose said she was delighted so much money had been raised. "I would like to thank the people of Bromyard for their support and my neighbour John Swindell-Robinson for his generous donation," she said.

Olive is now using the leg for another collection. Every year she asks people in Bromyard to pay a pound and guess the name of a life-sized replica of a local person she is knitting.

So far £106 has been raised for Bromyard Hospital and the remainder will go towards the town's Christmas lights.
