A GROWING trail of vandalism is tarnishing two neighbouring communities in Herefordshire's Golden Valley.

In the past month Kingstone and Clehonger residents have seen bus shelters, telephone kiosks and road signs all fall victim to the vandals' actions.

And one homeowner has been left with a £2,500 bill after 17th century windows were destroyed in another night of mayhem.

Alan Caldwell, who lives in a Grade II listed Kingstone cottage, was awoken by the sound of smashing glass after nuisance callers arrived late at his home.

He said: "It was about 12.15am and I was sleeping when I heard this noise.

"I came down to find these yobs had totally destroyed the leaded light casement hand-made windows, which will be virtually impossible to replace."

Progress

"The situation is deteriorating and it seems to be far worse here than in any other part of the county," he added.

Clehonger parish council's clerk Jennifer Honey backed the claims. She said: "In the past six weeks, there has been a rise in the amount of vandalism.

"Bins have been pushed over, the play area has been targeted and the bridle footpath signs have been pulled out of the ground."

PC Roger Bradley at Peterchurch Police Station recognises the problem, but believes progress is being made.

"There have been a number of incidents close to main roads in high visibility areas, which can make the problem seem worse than it is," he said.

"However, we have arrested two people for their actions on one particular night and warning letters have been sent out to homes to put into action the first part of anti-social behaviour orders," he added.

Meanwhile, Hereford police have appealed for anyone who has seen any vandals in the area to contact the crime desk on 08457 444888 with any details.
