WITH movies such as the Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now to his credit, Francis Ford Coppola is undoubtedly one of Hollywood's greats.

He burst on to the movie scene as a young man; eager, creative and full of ideas. Now, with the benefit of experience behind him, he is one of the most knowledgeable directors and producers in the business, alth-ough he has never lost the plucky young filmmaker's playfulness, enthusiasm and idealism that makes his movies unique.

Another eager young man, this time Hereford-based, is forging his way in a different artistic medium - literature.

Writer James Clarke saw his fourth book published last week. The second for publisher Virgin Books, the new title details Coppola's work, taking the reader step-by-step through the film-maker's career.

It combines useful production information for each film, identifying its achievements and failures, with analysis of creative intent and film-making ability.

A firm favourite with the author, James suggested the Coppola book to the publisher while working on his first Virgin Film title: Ridley Scott.

"There have been a few books about Coppola over the years, but nothing current," he said. "I saw it as a chance to look at his less familiar work, as well as the favourites."

James has just completed a trilogy of his own - his third Virgin Film title, which looks at animation as inspiration, is to be published in February.

Coppola is a fascinating read for movie buffs, industry professionals, and anyone who appreciates good cinema.
