LONG-standing member Jon Carter has been installed as the Burghill Valley captain for next season, taking over from Guy Evans.

Carter, an engineer with an electricity supply company, joined the club when it opened in 1992 and plays off a handicap of 14.

Mary Crockett has taken over the reins of the Ladies' section for a second time, having been their captain in 1995, with Wilf Jones stepping up as captain of the senior section and James Davies leading the juniors.

Competition secretary Colin Lippett has stepped down after six years in the job and Andy Hicks has taken over.

At the annual general meeting retiring junior captain Matthew Harrison was presented with the President's Junior Putter, and Mark Wright and Andy Hicks, the Peter Rhodes Cup.

n Roy Crane won the coveted Seniors' Layton Cup at Ross-on-Wye when he totalled 122 stableford points with the best three cards counting in the six competitions which ran through the season.

Runner-up was Jim Millar with 120 points, closely followed by Dennis Calder with 119.

Val Watts won a hotly-contested Taylor Cup, and reduced her handicap, with an impressive return of 89-18-69.

Jenny Perry bagged an ace at the par-three seventh hole, her second hole in one, and treated fellow competitors to wine on her return to the clubhouse.

Jenny Eckersley won the Medal Salver, open to all the medal winners this season, with a return of 103-33-70. Having started the year with a handicap of 38, her consistent play means that she will now play off 31.

n Herefordshire GC's latest winter competition produced a close finish with Ann Goodwin and Roger Wild getting the better of Karen and Roger Darby on a card countback in division 1 (0-19) after both pairs posted 40 stableford points.

Geraldene Kelly and Dave Quinn took third place with 39 points.

Jean and Ted Turner led the way in division 2 (20+) with 41 points, three clear of Doreen Heslop and Ian Foster who pipped Dawn Cooper and Phil Watkins on a countback.

n Tommy Taylor and Andy Rawciffe carded an impressive 47 stableford points to win the latest Belmont Winter Series better-ball pairs stableford.

They finished two clear of Steve Dyer and Lenny Andrews, who beat Mike Williams and Kevin Powell on a card countback.

Angus Maclean totalled 83 stableford points over two legs to win the Merryhill Seniors Cup, six clear of runner-up Tommy Boswell, with third-placed Brian Turner a further point behind.

n Nigel Cooper carded 42 stableford points to win Leominster's November medal, holding off the challenge of second-placed John Ford on 41, with Steve Brimfield next on 39.

There was a close finish to the ladies' Salter Greensomes Stableford Trophy with Jean Ashcroft and Pat Owen taking the honours when beating Lesley Turbutt and Yvonne Hopson on a card countback over the back six holes after both pairs had finished with 38 points.

Ladies' October medal, silver: Barbara Perrin 93-19-74; bronze: 1 Donna Blackwell 97-26-71, 3 Patricia Sharkey 109-37-72.

n Junior member Robert Pugh defied the elements to claim his first competition victory when he posted a splendid 87-23-64 to win the Hereford Municipal November medal.

He relegated the experienced Duncan Smith, 78-12-66, into second place, with John Davis in third spot with 78-10-68, and Kieron Helps fourth on 81-11-70.

Phil Green fired the best gross score of 75.

Alan Leake won the October stableford.

n Simon Jones put together 37 stableford points to win the Children in Need competition at Brockington.

He finished two points ahead of Bill Griffin, with Ian Wilkinson a further two points adrift in third place.

November stableford: 1 Brian Loose 33 pts, 2 Peter Boughey 29, 3 John Keyte 28.

Seniors Winter stableford: 1 Mike Avery 34, 2 Mike Hudson 32, 3 Brian Potter 32.

n Weobley neighbours Wyndham Evans and Ken Hill are forming a redoubtable partnership at Kington and claimed a second triumph when they won the Winter Better-Ball Stableford with 45 points.

They finished a point clear of runners-up Rob Pritchard and Colin Fensom, who beat Phil Price and Gary Moore on a card countback.

Titley gave Lyonshall a thrashing in the annual match between the neighbouring villages when they totalled an impressive 301-point aggregate in seven better-ball stableford matches, 35 more than their hapless opponents.

Jane Sankey and Roger Morris led the rout with a staggering 52 points, and they were backed up with excellent scores of 46 from Enid Crowe and David Forbes, and Dean Sankey and Mike Powell.

Titley skipper John Sankey and Andy Dewsbury managed a mere 45 points, but this was better than the meagre 43-point top score of Lyonshall's Steve Howard and David Wilkes.

Despite the humiliating defeat, Lyonshall captain Nigel Layton threw down the gauntlet for another challenge match in 2004.
