Hereford Choral Society's 167th season opens on Saturday, November 22, with a work by Ralph Vaughan Williams, written for the Three Choirs Festival in 1911.

The Five Mystical Songs are beautiful settings for baritone solo and chorus of poems by George Herbert.

The Society's chorus will be complemented by soloist Colin Campbell and Orchestra da Camera, conducted by Geraint Bowen.

Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, which also features, is not a setting of the words of the Requiem Mass but a selection of texts from the German vernacular bible chosen by Brahms himself.

It ranges in emotion from quiet resignation and restraint to overwhelming and joyful grandeur -abounding with memorable tunes and rich harmonies, both orchestral and choral.

Ruth Holton (soprano) completes the line-up for this work.

The concert, in Hereford Cathedral, begins at 7.30pm and tickets are available from the new ticket secretary, David Plowman, on 01432 274144 and from The Outback in Church Street, as well as the Cathedral Shop and St John's Door on the night.
