AN auction of goods and promises in a marquee at the Travellers Rest in Malswick, on October 3, will raise funds for a planned expansion of the Sheppard House Day Centre in Newent.

Sheppard House, run by the Newent Association for the Disabled, has already gained planning permission from the Forest of Dean District Council for improvements that could eventually lead to the facility offering residential respite care.

Pat Richards, Sheppard House administrator, said: "The proceeds will do directly to the building of an extension to the day centre.

"Plans have already been passed for the provision of two bathrooms, fully equipped for the disabled, a large room for craftwork, games and sports activities and possibly even film and theatre use."

There will be around 90 items and services on offer at the auction, which will start at 8pm.

Viewing will be available for the whole week before, at Sheppard House, where advance bids will be noted.

Star attractions are likely to include romantic holidays for two and a glider flight.

With fundraising still ongoing, no date has yet been given for the start and completion of the new extension.

The new facilities will be housed in a new block built on to the existing building, over what is now currently the centre's car park.

A new car park will be built as part of the planning conditions, on land adjoining the site.
