Hereford police have issued a warning for householders to be on their guard against bogus workmen after a woman paid more than £1,000 for work to be carried out on her driveway.
The woman, who is now seeking advice from the council's trading standards department, said the men were all plausible and wore reflective jackets.
PC Charles Naylor, Herefordshire's police crime risk manager, said: "Be absolutely sure that anyone calling at your home offering services is genuine. Insist that you see their identity cards and, if necessary, ask for a telephone number so that you can call to check their validity."
