A HOSPICE fundraiser who was plunged into semi-darkness as he rode with a gang of big-hearted bikers in France has helped to raise nearly £12,000.
Mike Pullin lost the sight in one eye as he and 17 other motorcyclists made a special trip to Hereford's French 'twin', Vierzon in aid of St Michael's Hospice.
"On the way down I noticed some flickering with my eyesight. I would have turned around and come back but I just put it down to stress and tiredness.
"There was horrific weather in France but the next day I noticed that my eyesight was going and within a few hours it had completely gone," explained Mike.
An operation to fix Mike's detached retina has 'seen' him in good health again although he didn't complete the excursion and had to get a taxi back home to Herefordshire.
The remaining motorcyclists were welcomed home at the Comet Inn, Madley with a charity auction, music, karaoke and a pig roast.
Witek Mintowt-Czyz, one of the bikers on the trip, also managed to obtain superbike rider, Jamie Toseland's leathers and Chris Vermeulen's helmet which were auctioned on the group's behalf by 'Riders for Health'.
Future fundraising activities include a trip to Hereford's German twin town, Dillenburg and an event involving 'wing walking belles'.
