HEREFORDSHIRE'S market towns proved to be the pick of the bunch during this year's Heart of England in Bloom awards last Friday.
Hard-working organisers from Hereford and surrounding towns waited with bated breath to hear the county had two gold, two silver and two special awards in a ceremony at Coventry Cathedral.
Improvements year after year secured Hereford a gold in the large town/small city section for its increased barrier planting, baskets and beautiful parks. Judges also commented on the multi-basket trees brightening up pedestrian areas.
Hereford in Bloom treasurer, Roger Peaker said: "It was extremely encouraging. We ended up in the largest of all the categories with very high-powered entries.
"It is all credit, not only to Hereford in Bloom, but also the shopkeepers and the local authority. We did amazingly well."
A sunny welcome to a market town 'glowing with colour' won Ledbury a gold in the medium town category.
Judges commented: "The whole town was positively glowing with colour and form with the baskets, planters and gardens full to overflowing with beautiful plants, none better than at the fire and ambulance stations - both were simply outstanding."
Ross-on-Wye also shone in the medium town category with a silver gilt award.
Delighted by the view from the Royal Hotel grounds, judges were able to see the town within its picturesque setting of the River Wye.
They said: "The main floral colour theme of the town was pink and white and was most attractive."
Bromyard also earned its place on the horticultural map with a silver gilt accolade in the small town section.
Describing the hanging baskets and planters as very colourful, vibrant and eye-catching, judges were particularly impressed with the town's advances.
They said: "With continued enthusiasm and attention to detail, we feel sure Bromyard can maintain its silver gilt award and move up to gold.."
Special awards included the Encams Trophy for exceptional achievement in litter management awarded to Hereford and Tracey Martin from Ledbury won the Les Topham Trophy for outstanding merit.
