Ross-ON-WYE golfers celebrating their centenary year made a special effort to remember with affection the outstanding service the late Tom Gurney and his wife, Elsie, gave to the club in its formative years and beyond.

Tom was head greenkeeper and Elsie, stewardess, until his retirement in 1975 when the Tom Gurney Shotgun Competition was introduced in his honour and it has been played ever since.

This time 46 pairs - the highest number for many years - took part in the mixed foursomes stableford, followed by a special dinner when vice-captain Neville Ovens paid tribute to Tom and Elsie Gurney and captain Paul Scuda-more announced the winners.

Results: 1 David Griffiths and Hilary Watkins 43 pts, 2 Tony Malim and Mabel Day 42, 3 Bob Cook and Teresa Verney 40.

Charles Houlbrooke won the closely-contested Collins Flag Medal when no fewer than 10 players had strokes in hand on the standard scratch 71 when they finished their rounds on the 18th hole.

Three players had recorded nett 67s and each had four strokes to play again at the first tee. David Owen holed out in four on the par-four first and held the lead until Houlbrooke, the last player out, hit a long drive, put an iron shot onto the green and sunk the putt for a birdie three. He went on to the second tee and hit another long drive over the brow of the hill to clinch victory.

The associated medal competition over 18 holes was decided by a countback.

Ross seniors avenged an earlier 4-3 defeat at Stinchcombe with a 6-2 victory over the Gloucestershire visitors. Alex Baber and Chris Malsom sunk putts from all parts of the greens for the best win, eight and six.

n Herefordshire GC A team reached the final of the Shropshire and Herefordshire Scratch League with an away win over Shrewsbury when Jonathan Devereux maintained his 100% record for the season.

Fred Birley recorded a nett 63 to win the monthly medal.

Herefordshire won by 333 points to 327 when they entertained Leomin-ster in a better-ball stableford match. Peter Timms and John Hill scored an impressive 48 for Hereford, while Roger Barrington and Ken Watson, and Terry Webb and Ian Smith recorded 44s.

n Brian Bengry won Leominster's Dave Barnes Trophy stableford with 43 points and also had the best gross score of 75.

Greenhorn Trophy: 1 Norman Whittall 46 pts, 2 Robert Stokes 44, 3 Dave Morgan 39.

Godfrey Havard won the Data Logic Trophy with the best stableford score of 44 points for 18 holes. The competition was run over three days and the best aggregate of two scores went to Alan Griffiths with 80 and the best three to Lee Jones 112.

n Alan Perry won Belmont's Denco running medal, held over three days, by two shots from three rivals who were separated only on countback. Perry was also a winner in the pairs stableford.

A countback was needed to decide the first three places in the seniors' stableford pairs better-ball competition.

n Malcom Keddie, father of St Andrews qualifier Mark, shot a nett 63 to win Hereford Municipal's August medal.

Results: 1 Malcolm Keddie 91-28-63, 2 Andrew Smart 72-6-66, 3 Jack Larkin 93-26-67, 4 M Hughes 85-15-70. Steve Horton recorded the only two of the competition on the par-three eighth.

Dean Gosling and Martin Hughes finished summer pairs champions after beating club captain Don Jarvis and Shaun Vivian five and four in the final.

Powerful driving by Gosling and solid play by Hughes saw them take a commanding five-hole lead after nine holes. A fight-back by Vivian and Jarvis was then nullified as Hughes and Gosling ran out easy winners.

Seniors captain Eric Williams took his men to play the county's five nine-hole courses over the summer season. Overall results: 1 John Taylor 79 pts, 2 Keith Strangwood 75, 3 Ron Jenkins 74, 4 Tony Mills 72.

Hereford Municipal's combined Captains' Day will be played on Sunday.

n J Davies won Brocking-ton's monthly medal with a nett 66.

Results: 1 J Davies 84-18-66, 2 B Loose 92-23-69, 3 B Jones 87-17-70.

Seniors' Texas scramble: 1 M Avery, P Boughey and K Shaw nett 61, 2 Edwards, D Prosser and A Shave 61, 3 K Fone, M Hudson and J Powis 63.

n Kington's greensome foursomes plate had a close finish requiring a countback.

Results: 1 Gareth Williams and Gavin Evans 79-17.5-61.5, 2 Rob Pritchard and Colin Fenson 70-8.5-61.5, 3 Tony Stokes and Colin fenson 79-16.5-62.5.

Visiting Worcester G & C beat Kington 5-1 when their scratch player, Lee Richardson, had a hole in one on the 12th. Kington also lost 4-2 at home to Leominster.

But Kington seniors won 4-3 away to arch rivals Herefordshire GC.
