DAVID Edwards (Eardis-land BC) was a worthy winner of the 27th Anning Youth Trophy competition played at St Martin's BC.
Both finalists, Edwards and Luke Harwood (Hereford BC), had won all their section matches convincingly.
In the final Harwood shot into a 10-0 lead in seven ends, using shorter length jacks to great effect.
Undaunted Edwards persisted and, from being 11-1 down after nine ends, he scored one on the 12th, lengthened the jack and won eight of the next nine ends to go one in from at 13-12.
He then won the next six ends, scoring 12 shots to one and disturbing Harwood's confidence.
It was nip and tuck from then on, with Edwards just getting in front to lead 19-14. When Harwood came back at him strongly, picking up five shots in three ends to level at 19 all, he rallied to score two to win 21-19 after 29 ends of a very interesting and exciting contest.
Becky Morgan (Kings-land BC) won three of her four section games, losing to David Edwards by only one shot, 5-6. She was a very clear and worthy runner-up in Section A. The other players in that section were Emma Lloyd (0pts), Grant Baldwin (4s) and Ben Harwood (2). All played well but were no match against Edwards and Morgan in their respective games.
In Section B, last year's runner-up Daniel Palmer (Coleford) beat Shaun Jones (Leominster) 12-5 for his only win. His clubmate Gareth Morgan beat him 10-4 to get his two points, losing narrowly 9-10 against Shaun Jones.
Against Luke Harwood, Jones played well, losing by only one shot, 9-10, leaving Luke undefeated in the section.
This year's entry was reduced by the absence of several young players who were competing in their own club finals, but those who did compete provided a wonderful afternoon of entertaining bowls.
The trophies were presented by Nora Mason.
