DRINKERS in Bringsty may be able to enjoy some Christmas cheer at the Live and Let Live.

Owners of the pub are hoping that renovation work will be completed in time.

Landlords Sue and Alan Clarke were due to receive planning permission for revised designs this week.

"We've got to see what problems we come across during the build but it would be nice to open at Christmas," said Mrs Clarke.

The pub, off Bringsty Common, has been at the centre of a campaign to have it reopened since it closed in 1996. Former owner Shirley Cook then submitted plans to turn it into a housing, only for villagers to oppose the development.

Mr and Mrs Clarke bought the pub two years ago and are looking forward to finally getting behind the bar. They had been concerned that planners would not agree to building work on the 250-year-old pub.

"To say it's pleasing is a bit of an understatement," said Mrs Clarke.

She also paid tribute to the support given by Bringsty residents. A 180-name petition and letters were sent to the council backing the plans.

Mrs Clarke said: "It was noted at the planning meeting how many letters of approval were received.

"I think there were 20-odd from the Commoners so considering this has been going for six years that isn't too bad."
