SUMMERHILL'S support for their junior section was rewarded when young Robert Sneddon won Billy Finn's Captain's Day prize with a nett 63.

A countback was needed to decide the 0-17 category when Phil Jones pipped Aidy Davies on the back nine after each had finished with a nett 65. They were pushed all the way by John Carter, who was third with 66.

Another talented junior member, Sam Stevenson, won the 18-28 category with 66, followed by Ian Powell, 68, who beat Dave Green on countback.

Captain's guest Lee Bannister won the prize for the best gross score of 71 - a new course record - and he also recorded the longest drive. Phil Jones won the nearest-the-pin prize.

n Peter Boughey won Brockington's Patten Pinnacle competition, a stableford off threequarter handicap.

n Kington seniors staged a three-man Texas Scramble.

The seniors' trip to Rolls of Monmouth resulted in a 4-1 defeat.

n The Fairbrother Cup, which is played as a bogey, saw the first use of the new siren system at Burghill Valley to suspend play in dangerous conditions.

Play was suspended for 45 minutes when a thunderstorm struck the course but, after play got underway again, Ian Gardiner produced a remarkable score of six up to win the trophy, while division one winner Eddie Powell was runner-up overall with four up.

The Open Pairs, which attracted a full entry, was dominated by home players who were used to the pace of the tricky greens.

Winners were Alan Hirons and Buster Sollis with 47 points and three pairs had 45. Mark Prior and Andy Lambert were second on countback from Noel Downes and Tony Edwards, with Mark Wright and Andy Hicks fourth.

n There was a close finish to Belmont GC's stableford for the Belmont Trophy with Roger Woolley winning by a point.

Results: 1 Roger Wooley 39 pts, 2 Steve Hughes 38, 3 Dave Tedstone 37.

Brothers Tommy and Alf Boswell were first and second respectively in the seniors' four-clubs competition.

Results: 1 Tommy Boswell 40 pts, 2 Alf Boswell 38, 3 Jim Meadows 37.

n David Strangwood was a convincing winner of the Grape Vaults Society's annual stableford at Leominster with 42 points.

He finished five ahead of runner-up John Lilley, while Derek Phillips was third on 36. Phillips also won the longest drive, and the nearest the pin prize went to Podgy Gough.

n The Brian Preece Memorial Trust Golf Day will be played at Burghill Valley on Friday, September 12, when all proceeds will go to Ready, Steady, Win, supporting young, talented sports people.

The charity stableford is for teams of four with the best two scores counting, off threequarters handicap, and there are various prizes.
