HEREFORD United's Robin Elmes, who celebrated his return to action with a goal in the 4-1 midweek defeat of Boldmere St Michaels, is hoping the Bulls get off to a flyer in the Conference.
The striker believes it is vital United are still in promotion contention at Christmas but fears with just one club going up to the Third Division even fifth or sixth place in the festive period could leave the Bulls playing for nothing for the remainder of the season.
"We are looking to get a good start like we did last season because it sets things up nicely," he said.
"Unfortunately, still only one team goes up, so even if we are fifth or sixth very often you can end up playing for nothing so obviously it is important to make a good start.
"It would also be nice to go on a cup run like we did in my first year here and also in the FA Trophy which was a great experience albeit one that ended in failure."
Elmes has been impressed with the signings that the Bulls's Director of Football, Graham Turner, has made and believes they will boost the squad.
"I have only played 45 minutes with them but they looked very useful," he said. "Mark Williams looks very competent, Scott Voice has got an exceptional goalscoring record, which is something we haven't had over the last couple of seasons, and Scott Goodwin has made a good start to his career here."
Elmes played just 45 minutes against Boldmere before coming off with a sore back but was not too concerned and was hoping to be fit for the Manchester United clash at Edgar Street today.
Although eager to play against the Red Devils, Elmes admitted he was anticipating the friendly against Voice's old team, Bilston Town, just as much.
"Pre-season games are important and it doesn't matter who you play against because you get out what you put in.
"I'm looking forward to playing Bilston as much as Man Utd or Everton. You can do all the running in the world but nothing compares to playing matches."
