Hereford United boss Graham Turner has been busy on the phone this week in an attempt to bring in a goalkeeper.

This followed Matt Baker's sending off in the 2-0 Nationwide Conference defeat at Nuneaton Borough on Tuesday night.

But despite Baker's red card for bringing Boro striker Marc McGregor crashing to the ground, Turner has been pretty pleased with his keeper's performances in place of long-term injury casualty, Scott Cooksey.

"It was unfortunate Matt was sent off because he's been keeping goal well," said Turner.

"But he showed what he could do last season and he's got a great deal of confidence and competence."

England non-league international Cooksey, who first made his name at Bromsgrove Rovers, is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Sports Centre at Lilleshall after picking up an infection in a wrist injury.

But he is making progress according to player-coach Phil Robinson. "Scott picked up a nasty infection in his wrist which was painful and caused a lack of mobility in his hand but he's been responding to treatment."

In the meantime Robinson is happy to see Baker deputise in goal.

Baker was at Hull City as an apprentice along with Bulls' skipper Ian Wright but signed for the Bulls last summer after an extended trial period.

"He started at Hull with Ian Wright where he used to clean his boots although not very well according to Wrighty," said Robinson.

"He came here when he was released from Hull and impressed during a long trial spell.

"He's a very good shot-stopper, very mobile and good on the ball and kicks well with either foot which is an important part of goalkeeping these days.

"He was unlucky to be sent off on Tuesday, the lad went through and I think Matt just caught him."

Hereford's injury woes continue and Robinson will be out for another month, while John Shirley, Jimmy Quiggin and Scott Voice are carrying knocks.
