Hereford looked set to end a run of six games without a win when they led Altrincham 2-1 deep into injury time of their Nationwide Conference match at Edgar Street on Saturday.
That was until 'super sub' Richard Landon snatched a 93rd-minute equaliser which extended Altrincham's unbeaten Conference sequence to 12 games, nine of which have been drawn.
It was Landon's fifth goal in six appearances and he also netted when the Robins' beat Hereford 2-1 at Moss Lane in November.
With three of the four minutes of added time gone, the visitors forced a corner on their left.
The entire Hereford team and eight of their opponents packed into the home penalty area as Steve Hawse lofted over the flag-kick. In the ensuing scramble Landon prodded the ball into the net to the delight of the 106 visiting supporters.
It left United director of football Graham Turner shaking his head and saying: "Yet another two points thrown away. We played much better than we did at Billericay and in patches passed the ball around positively.
"But we gave away an unnecessary free-kick which led to their first goal. Then we have to defend a corner successfully and the game is won, but we fail to do so."
Bulls striker Rob Elmes said: "To concede a goal in injury time is sickening. The dressing room is very sombre."
But Hereford's frailty at defending set pieces was again exposed.
Certainly United had far the better of the exchanges and keeper Mark Jones had to make only one testing save when Altrincham's top scorer Kevin Ellison - the Robins have turned down a £130,000 bid from Preston for him - fired in an angled shot in the second period.
Jones' counterpart Dean Greygoose came to the visitors' rescue in the third minute with a superb save. Elmes powered in a header from Chris Lane's cross which Greygoose managed to parry against the bar. Midway through the half the lively Gavin Williams set up a great chance for Elmes, but the striker elected to hit the ball first time and miscued his shot well wide.
Although the Bulls continued to control the game, it remained goalless at half-time. But a five-minute period early in the second period produced a flurry of scores.
In the 51st minute Elmes put Mark Taylor clear on the right and he crossed for Paul Parry to race in from the left flank and fire a close range shot past Greygoose for his third goal of the season. Within two minutes the Robins equalised.
Simeon Hodson's free-kick found Gavin Price unmarked and he planted a header into United's net.
But United's supporters' groans had hardly died down before Ian Rodgerson restored Hereford's lead with his 10th goal for the club, and a rare headed one at that.
Williams flicked on Taylor's free-kick to the veteran midfielder who beat Greygoose with a looping header.
Then, with Altrincham's unbeaten run in jeopardy, Landon struck to give them some reward from their first ever visit to Edgar Street.
