PEREGRINE falcons swooped at breakneck speed to catch a swinging lure watched by an open-mouthed audience far below on Longtown's show ground.

An Indian Eagle Owl and a Harris Hawk joined the air display set against the panoramic backdrop of the Black Mountains last weekend.

As well as Michael Davies' falconry demonstration, fancy fowls puffed up their feathers to entertain hundreds of onlookers in a new event.

There for the first time, too, was a demonstration of vintage tractors, including Zetors, David Browns and Massey Fergusons, offset by a modern monster.

There were record entries in the horse and pony events and classes in the vegetable, produce and handicraft sections were well supported, as were the children's sports.

Children were also entertained by a fire engine from Ewyas Harold, Corki the clown and his magic tricks and a bouncy castle. Live band, Saxology, evoked an earlier era with music from the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

The vast numbers on the show ground, however, led to an unprecedented catastrophe when the refreshment tent run by the WI ran out of cakes!
