HEREFORDSHIRE GC secretary Brian Maggs and past captain Brian Lewis both carded impressive 40 stableford points to share the honours when club captain Norman Sockett organised a successful Capt-ain's Away Day at Llandrindod Wells.

Peter Timms and Geoff Price took the pairs award with 77 points, five clear of Maggs and Bob Dando.

John Morrill, Alan Creighton, David Evans and Jerry Gough claimed the team prize.

The captain's team had an honourable 2-2 half with the juniors in their annual challenge match.

Tony Byrne and Doug Parry, and David Shuttleworth and Andrew Wheatstone won for the club, with Ross Adams and Richard Wellings, and Will Carr and Lloyd Dixon successful for the juniors.

The A team's quest to reach the final of the Shropshire and Hereford-shire Scratch League is delicately balanced after they beat Shrewsbury 2-1 in the first leg at Wormsley.

Jonathan Devereux, who is undefeated in league matches this season, and Eliot Shaw won their matches, with Neil Greening gaining what might prove to be a vital half.

The seniors beat visiting Wernddu 7-1 in a friendly match.

n Rob Arrowsmith continued his excellent run of form when he carded a fine 74-9-65 to win Leominster's August medal, and also posted the best gross score of 74.

n St Andrews qualifier Mark Keddie teamed up with Ian McLaren to win Hereford Municipal's August foursomes stableford with 43 points.

They finished a point ahead of Margaret Buckeridge and Dean Gosling, with Janet Hill and Martin Hughes and Jane King and Phil Green sharing third place with 40 points.

n Paul Blevins, Neil Powell, Mel Bennion and Gary Tutty took advantage of the flattering format to win Belmont's Texas Scramble with a splendid 53.3.

This gave them a clear margin over runners-up Steve Dyer, Pete Edwards, Lenny Andrews and Alby Powell who posted 55.1.

The seniors held a team stableford competition in which the two best scores of the three team members counted on each hole. This produced a close finish with Dennis Pritchard, Dave Atkinson and Ivor Prosser clocking 85 points, one point more than runners-up Tony Ball, Gordon Bumphrey and Ian Caves.

n No fewer than 34 clubs were represented when Ross-on-Wye held their Centenary Open Am-Am.

In a keenly contested competition, in which the best three scores from each team of four counted on each hole, two teams posted 116 stableford points, with a team of visitors drawn from three clubs, Matthew Wilson (Saltford), Mick Mackiner (Lansdown), John Denn-an (Shortwood) and Dave Westlake (Shortwood), beating the home team of Paul Rivett, Mike Cooper, Gwynne Morgan and James Morgan on a card countback.

Paul Reynaert (Ross), Peter Chapman (Ross), Ken Matthews (Burghill) and Simon Eales (Worcester) took third place with 115 points.

Kelvin Knight (Short-wood) was nearest the pin on the par-three ninth hole. Another local team created much interest when three of the members, George Cason, Terry Watts and Gerald Turner each scored birdie twos on the par-three 12th hole, the fourth member and club vice-captain Neville Ovens being only too pleased to record a splendid nine points for the hole.

Having suffered a whitewash and four heavy defeats in their last five visits to Cotswold Hills, the seniors drew 4-4 drew in this year's away match.

n Kington were the only Herefordshire team to get among the prizes in the annual Shropshire and Herefordshire Cognac Trophy held at Worfield, the club of the twin-counties president Trevor Williams.

Derek Brookes, Peter Burgoyne and junior Ian MacLeod posted 91 stableford points to claim fourth place, six adrift of Market Drayton's winning score.

Herefordshire president Trevor Williams, backed up by twin-counties captain Barry Ruddick, Mike Fowkes and junior David Goyka, posted 93 points for runners-up spot.

They edged out the team of William Coates, the president of Cognac GC, with Tom Squires, Paul Sedgwick and junior Adam Dickens, into third place by a point.

Nearest-the-pin prizes went to Burghill Valley's Guy Evans and Sam Baker.
