A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy had a lucky escape when he got stuck on a weir on the River Lugg.
The youngster had been playing in the water with friends when he got into difficulties and became stranded on the concrete platform below Bridge Street in Leominster.
Leominster sub-officer Roger Hall arrived on the scene at 6pm on Monday to lead the emergency rescue operation.
"The poor lad was trapped on the small slippery weir and was in danger because there was a big drop to the one side, where there is some deep water," he explained.
"Luckily a paramedic had thrown a rope to him and he was holding on to that so he would not get swept away with the water."
Accompanied by two colleagues, the fire-fighter went into the river to rescue the Leominster boy.
"We got down to the river and waded through the 3ft deep water, which although may not be deep for us, could be very dangerous for a nine-year-old kid," he said.
"We carried him to the side of the river and lifted him over a wall, where he was looked after by ambulance staff, who checked him out and let him go home," he added.
