Kington Town 3 Pegasus Juniors 2

KINGTON retained the Kington Invitation Challenge Cup in an entertaining game, played in the extreme heat, at the Recreation Ground.

A brace of goals from Alex Hunt and 25-yard screamer from Danny Moon were sufficient to keep the cup in the home town. Darren Jones, with the first goal, and Gavin Stone, with the last goal, replied for the Hereford visitors.

Pegasus were first in action when a Danny Stack shot was saved at the expense of a corner by the new Town goalkeeper Rory Hollings-head.

This was taken quickly and caught the home defence napping as Darren Jones scored with a terrific shot from the edge of the box. A minute later Mike Symonds should have done better with a shot that flew low over the bar when he was well placed.

It took Kington 20 minutes before they tested visiting keeper Matt Taylor when he blocked a shot from Ben Chambers.

Shortly afterwards a speculative lob by Lewis Jones from fully 35 yards saw Hollingshead scrambling back towards his goal as the ball landed perilously close to the far post.

After a water break, a rejuvenated home side became more involved. Carl Morgan pushed forward and went close to levelling the scores when he hit the post from a narrow angle.

Then, after a cross-field run, he slipped the ball to Hunt who hit a shot past Taylor to tie the scores. Hunt was denied a second on the stroke of half-time when Taylor made a superb save from a header.

In the seventh minute of the second half Taylor made another fine stop, this time from Kevin Gwillam, and in the following minute Morgan exposed the visiting defence and Hunt doubled his tally with a simple goal at the far post.

Moon then unleashed his best shot of the day to give the North Herefordshire side a two-goal cushion.

Having taken on more water, the temperature cooled somewhat. But Adriano Girolami found Symonds with a superb diagonal pass and the visiting captain laid a pass into the path of Stone who drove the ball passed the home keeper.

The final quarter was dominated by Pegasus who were unable to breach the home defence for a third time.
