AT 18 Joss Garman is a veteran of battles with Britain's military. Now the Hereford Sixth Form College student has been 'decorated' in his fight for peace.

Joss's principles were backed by his Principal; college head Dr Jonathon Godfrey nominated him for the Moral Courage award from the National Anne Frank Exhibition.

"Joss has played an active part in groups promoting conservation, environmental awareness and peace, his involvement founded on a passionate belief in these issues," said Dr Godfrey.

Joss says he is honoured. The usual response to his actions in the name of peace and protection of the environment is arrest and trial.

Over the past year alone Joss has broken into the air base at Fairford from where American bombers took off to attack Iraq, cut a way inside the Menwith Hill spy station and blocked entry to Faslane naval yard where UK and US nuclear submarines dock.

Joss, from Dolau, near Llandrindod Wells, is an activist with Trident Ploughshares promoting non-violent protest against nuclear weapons and war. He has also been a county co-ordinator for Greenpeace.

This year he found himself in the frontline as founder of Hereford Students Against War, heading an animated anti-war demonstration that took the city by surprise earlier this year.

When at his books Joss studies politics, biology, geography and environmental science.
