CARNIVAL PROCESSIONS - "Music! Music! Music!" is the theme of Knighton's two carnival processions on Showday, Saturday, August 30. The midday procession will assemble in Market Square at 11.30am. with judging at 12 noon, and moving off at 12.30pm. For class 10, which is for the best lorry or trailer, the first prize is £40, the second prize £30, and every other entry in this class will get £20. Details of all prizes and trophies are on the procession schedules which are widely available in the town. Entries do not have to be in the theme to win class prizes, but there are additional prizes for the best entry within the theme in the pedestrian classes and in the vehicular classes. The procession will include a parade of classic cars. The evening procession will assemble at Market Square at 7.30pm, with judging at 8.00pm and the procession moving off at 8.30pm. In the evening the best lorry or trailer gets £60, with a second prize of £30, and £20 to all other entries in the class. This is a traditionally a torchlight procession, and upto 1961 real torches were used which were very impressive at the start, but which became burned out by the end of the long processional route which went down Station Road to the station yard and then back up to the Norton Arms Hotel were the presentations were made. Because of the difficulty of getting people to carry the cumbersome torches the 'glorified candles' were introduced in 1962 and have been used ever since. However, because of safety concerns these will now be replaced by battery operated "swords". Topicality was once a feature of carnival processions. One year a group even dared to go as the Urban District Council. However, there is the still the RAFA Cup for the most topical vehicular turnout, for those who wish to give it a try. Knighton Town Silver Band and Newtown Youth Marching Band will play a prominent part in both processions, as will other marching bands, and there will be plenty more music at locations along the processional route in the run up to both processions. Carnival Princess Leanne Banks and her float will also feature at both mid-day and evening parades. Leanne will be crowned on the showfield after the midday procession. Those taking part are urged to arrive at the times stated above, so that the judging can be completed promptly, and the processions get underway.

ST EDWARD'S CHURCH - Father Andrew Pearce, Vicar of East Radnor, celebrated Eucharist last Sunday at St Edward's Church. Major Robert Maslen-Jones and Mr John Clements read the lessons. Mr Cecil Rudge was organist and Mrs Hilary Howcroft directed the St Edward's Choir which led the singing of the Rudge musical setting of the Eucharist. Mrs Jean Price led the intercessions. The congregation was shocked and saddened at the sudden death of one of its most active members, Mr Ken Barlow. "Ken was a pillar of St Edward's, and a much loved member of both church and community," said Father Andrew.
