ST PETER'S CHURCH - St. Peter's Church are holding a Wedding Weekend on August 16 and 17. There will be a display of 18 wedding dresses, grooms suits, bridesmaids dresses, page boy outfit, photographs to see with a quiz on whose wedding it is? As well as flower displays, there will also be a visit from Sue Hubbard of the County Record Office, a model church with a wedding scene from Dolls House Fun in Hay-on Wye, refreshments, cake and jam stall and a single tier wedding cake to be won. There will be an organist in the church during most of the weekend to play favourite wedding hymns and a bell ringing during the weekend. On Sunday, August 17, at 6pm there will be a Songs of Praise. On Saturday, September 27, there is a coach trip going to The Malvern Autumn Garden and Country Show. This is the last of the season's garden shows having a mix of flowers, food and animals with a country craft flavour. This years Harvest Festival is being held at St. Peter's Church on 12th October at 11am, followed by harvest lunch in The Golden Valley Community Centre.

CHARITY EVENING - The outstanding total of £24,386 was raised at a fundraising supper and dance at Knighton Community Centre co-ordinated by Mrs Frances Thomas. £12,000 of this total came from an auction of celebrity memorabilia with £1,150 paid for a Real Madrid football shirt signed by Ronaldo; £1,100 for two seats for a Welsh rugby home international; £1,000 for A Prison Diary by Jeffrey Archer (signed,dated and with prison number); and £800 for Statecraft - Strategies for a Changing World by Margaret Thatcher (signed). A copy of W. Hatfield's hard to get book "Knighton" attracted a winning bid of £300. Altogether 29 items were auctioned. There was also a silent auction (which raised £2,631) and a raffle The evening was a very enjoyable one as well as a successful fundraiser with music by Soul Supply (formerly the Roaring Forties), a band which has become a great favourite in the area. "It would be difficult to thank everyone who has contributed in some way to this evening," said Mrs Thomas. "However, thank you all for your generosity, gifts and time. I also thank those who attended the event and made it such a great success." The proceeds will be split between The Lingen Davies Children's Cancer Appeal and The Hope House Children's Hospice, with £12,193 going to each charity. The Lingen Davies Children's Cancer Rainbow Appeal was founded in 1979 as the Cobalt Unit Trust Fund. This charity is appealing for £470,000 for a specialised children's cancer treatment unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The Hope House Hospice at Morda near Oswestry is for terminally ill children. The running costs exceed £1 million each year, and most of this comes from voluntary donations. No charge is made to families using this service which is available to children living in Cheshire, Shropshire and North and Mid Wales.
