MADAM, After reading your letters page of July 31, I had to write to express my disgust and annoyance at the letter from Mrs Muirden.
Firstly may I point out that no-one wants to see anyone struggling in life - no-one objects to disabled persons being able to park closest to their objective - but the 'disabled of today' really are milking the hand of human kindness - always of course, with the trite remark to criticism - I wish I had your health.
More often the genuine disabled never demand and are very conscious of being independent. So I put it to Mrs Muirden she wasn't upset at receiving the cautionary notice. She was angry - angry at herself for not thinking to pay for parking; to further help the hospital funds (she refers to) in order that more people benefit at the hospital clinic - persons who despite their age, infirmity, financial position pay their way in life and are proud to do so.
Disablement is not means tested so why is it free parking is expected and received anyway? Many, many people of much worse financial positions have to pay for parking - surely if the vast numbers of disabled people paid then the fees could be greatly reduced for everyone and the council would save on the cost of sign posting. Mrs Muirden didn't state the make and year of her car but if she can afford to run a car then she should be able to pay parking fees, in the car parks, like everyone else.
Despite commending the warden's consideration at not fining Mrs Muirden's car it must be pointed out that it is not fair to others, who, in the same position would be deemed breaking the law and duly fined for doing so, and quite rightly.
So it is obvious that when your newspaper gives prominence to such letters from persons who on the whole receive a very good dispensation against parking fees, put the wardens in an insidious position.
I have not written this letter lightly and do not wish to appear mean spirited towards the disabled of today but some do expect too much and everyone is now afraid to make any form of criticism against them.
I can well imagine the bombardment of letters to come - decrying the healthy youth taking their disabled spaces - but well I wonder where the youth get their 'take' mentality from.
MRS L JONES,
Ogmore by Sea, Bridgend.
