I VISIT Hereford frequently and like to go out into the country and enjoy riding.
Generally negotiating the traffic is no problem and all road users seem to respect each other.
Recently an incident occurred that concerned me. I signalled to a driver of a 4x4 vehicle coming towards me to slow down. My horse was trained to ride on the road but I like to keep both hands on the reins and keep him as controlled as possible.
The driver did slow and all was well but, to my surprise, the same vehicle reversed back up the lane with complete disregard to myself or another car to tell me how rude I was for not saying thank you! This was potentially very dangerous.
To be courteous is nice but is not top of my priorities for safety. The Highway Code says drivers should be particularly careful of horses and riders, especially when overtaking.
I would like to continue to enjoy visiting the countryside and all the benefits it has to offer without encountering such rude and ignorant people.
