A POSTMASTER who has become a legend in his Herefordshire village for his voluntary work with the sick and elderly has been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.
MBE winner Brian Squires has been at the centre of Linton life for 30 years and has dedicated much of his time to generations of the elderly and others unable to fend for themselves.
With wife Pat he ran the village post office for more than 20 years and since the shop closed, nearly 10 years ago, he has provided a two-day-a- week post office service.
Paying tribute, Linton's Nigel Vandyck said: "Brian's service has given a disproportionate contribution to community life in Linton. Not satisfied with this, he has given much of his time to voluntary work for the community.
He added: "He has used his building skills to maintain the church and the village green's hedges and trees. He has raised funds for the church and village hall through personal drive and effort. He has ridden sponsored cycle rides, given slide shows and made jam and marmalade for charity."
