BED PUSH -- The charity bed push, started from the Three Salmons at Cross Ash was a huge success. The car park at the Three Salmons was a hive of activity and full of colour and excitement as the teams prepared for the start. Crowds of supporters had turned up to see them off, including the church Deacon, Dr Jean Prosser, Chris Bacon, a number of the ministry team and Cecil Nicholas, Church Warden of Llanvair Church. The teams of bed pushers, all between 10- and 15 years old, were dressed in bright and baggy pyjamas and enormous hats. There was plenty of support and help from parents though the idea for the fundraising came from the children themselves. As well as the bed, there were two accompanying vehicles. The lead vehicle bore plenty of signs and sponsors' names and logos; the back-up Landrover followed the bed and transported the other teams and had a megaphone to keep in touch with the bed. Promptly at 11.30 am, as planned, the lead vehicle pulled out into the main road, followed by the bed with the first team of pushers. They left Cross Ash to cheers and waves from the crowd. Just around the corner, Pearl Nash had flags flying and was at her gate to throw coins into the buckets and wave to the participants. It was a hot day and it must have been tiring pushing the bed, but breaks had been arranged, sponsored by local people who provided cool drinks. The teams changed over at each break and by 2.30pm the bed arrived at the Angel Hotel in Abergavenny. Photographs were taken and the Angel provided cool drinks, then the teams made their way through the town to Radstock Court where the great adventure ended. The collection in the buckets came to £385. Everyone was so generous and cars stopped en route to toss money into the buckets. With the sponsor money, well in excess of £1,000 was raised for Llanvair Cilgoed church and the Grosmont Group Youth Worker Fund. The youngsters had a wonderful day and are very appreciative of all the help and support they received.
FOUND -- A pair of glasses on a red cord was found on a windowsill in Skenfrith Parish Hall last Thursday, after the clothes sale. Call Shirley Jones on 01600 750698 or Kath Jasper on 01600 750361 if you left your glasses behind.
SALE -- The sale was very successful. There was a good attendance and many people found bargains. Sue Gazzard's customers come time after time and look forward to her sales. As soon as the sale was over at 1.30, Sue packed up all her unsold clothes and set off for Huddersfield to set up another sale there. Sue comes to Skenfrith twice a year and everyone is looking forward to her next visit.
CONSERVATORY -- The second-hand conservatory bought by Skenfrith Hall Committee from an advertisement in The Hereford Times is almost finished. Ted Jasper has worked really hard to get it completed and was recently painting the outside and also putting a coat of paint on garden benches. All that remains to be done is to knock through from inside the hall. Initially, the conservatory will provide much needed extra storage space. In time it might be used for teas but at the moment the committee is happy to have extra storage space. Ted has also weeded the garden. Tubs filled with shrubs and plants a year ago are looking a little sparse so a few annuals would fill a space and brighten up the garden area.
