A COUPLE whose country house and garden were once a favourite retreat of poet William Wordsworth have won a silver trowel award under the National Gardens Scheme.
Colonel James and Mrs Rosemary Polley of Grantsfield, near Kimbolton, have gained the award 'in recognition of their hard work and enthusiasm' in opening their garden to the public over the last 21 years.
The NGS raises funds for the Macmillan Nurses, Gardeners Benevolent Fund and other charities.
Visitors to Grantsfield on Sunday will see NGS Herefordshire county organiser Lady Curtis present the silver trowel to Col and Mrs Polley at 3.30pm.
The garden, which will be open to the public on Sunday and Monday afternoons from 2pm, is admired for its display of shrubs and trees and a wide variety of unusual plants. There is also an orchard and kitchen garden.
