FOR a council whose stated ambition is to tackle rural poverty, the results of the recent job evaluation exercise has to count as a massive own goal, one that has left many employees feeling 'as sick as a parrot'.
Herefordshire Council has not only penalised the lowest paid staff, it has done it by playing Robin Hood in reverse, robbing the poor to reward the rich.
What sort of message is this giving to its own staff, and to other employers in a low pay area such as Herefordshire?
How does the council expect to retain or recruit staff? Why has Herefordshire Council, unlike other authorities, refused to acknowledge that an equitable restructuring of salary grades required some additional funding?
Who are the alleged 60 per cent of staff who have gained and by how much?
Not so long ago staff were congratulated on achieving two-star status for Hereford-shire as an achieving authority. This is how the staff have been rewarded.
JOHN ANDREWS, Brierley, Leominster.
