Ledbury's planned Golden Jubilee Carnival could fail to materialise unless more people join the organising committee.

Five years ago, there were 18 carnival committee members. Now there are just seven.

Committee spokesman Jon Lane said: "At the moment we're still buoyant from last year's carnival. But the feeling is that without more help for next year's event, in the next six months, it might not be feasible to stage it.

"Ledbury might not get its Golden Jubilee Carnival."

The committee's strength has declined in recent years as members moved on to fulfil other commitments.

This year alone, three members - Tony Rees, Martin Eager and Ron Wiseman - have all decided to stand down after many years of dedicated service.

Public interest in Ledbury's carnival continues to remain very high.

This year's highly successful Flower Power Carnival attracted a crowd estimated at around 8,000 strong, while the carnival committee open meeting last month was attended by around 30 people.

But Mr Lane explained: "There are a lot of people out there who want to help but they won't commit themselves to a committee.

The royal theme for next year's carnival was suggested by mayor Phil Bettington to coincide with the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

Procession co-ordinator Helen Davies described the concept as "a pageant of kings and queens through the ages and also, perhaps, the involvement of historical recreation groups".
