Bromyard 38 pts Five Ways OE 8

AFTER an evenly contested first period in which they held a slender 7-5 lead, Bromyard ran in four tries to get their North Midlands Division 1 campaign off to a winning start.

Piers Gaunt and Richard Moger were the stars in a good all-round team performance and shared the points. Moger crossed the line for four tries, while Gaunt collected one try, five conversions and a penalty goal.

Five Ways were first to settle and opened the scoring with an unconverted try. Moger quickly levelled the score and fly-half Gaunt put the home team into a lead which they held for the rest of the match.

Gaunt took the game by the scruff of the neck in the early stages of the second half. He crossed for a try, converted it, and then added a penalty to stretch the lead to 17-5. The visitors reduced the deficit with a penalty kick.

The rest of the game belonged to the hands of Moger and the boot of Gaunt as the home team capitalised on some fine open rugby with 21 points from three converted tries to send them into this week's local derby with high-flying Tenbury full of confidence.
